"From the corner of a neighboring building, a pair of not-quite-human eyes watched her intently in the morning half-light. Mimi suddenly felt strange, off-balance. The sidewalk rose up toward her sideways; she would have screamed, but she couldn't find her voice. The world turned gray, static-y, electric.
For such a light figure, she hit the ground with a surprising thud.

The not-quite-human eyes opened wide and then turned surprisingly quickly into the eyes of a crow that flew to a nearby rooftop. From there he could get a good view of the street, the driver running to help Mimi, the ambulance, the lights, the end of the warm LA night."

Mimi's sudden illness brings her an unexpected companion. When that companion turns out to be a shapeshifter who needs Mimi's help to fight greed and corruption in her elite social circle, Mimi's life plunges into a desperate attempt to stop her (ex) boyfriend from seizing control of many of the world's financial resources.

"Ky dreamed of Mimi. In his dream she ran through her yard followed by a spaniel, dodging palm trees. She laughed and held a tennis ball tantalizingly in the air. She threw it across the yard. The spaniel chased it and returned victorious, tail wagging, dropping the prize at her feet. Martine called out the patio door and the spaniel and Mimi walked up to the house. Only then did Ky see Mimi’s slight limp, her right leg dragging, a little wince of pain on her face as she started up the steps. Martine gave the little spaniel a treat as they went inside. The kitchen windows threw a warm light on the pool and patio.

Mimi dreamed of snow. It swirled around her eyelashes so much that at first she couldn’t see. Slowly, tall evergreens came into focus. Then a building, an old factory emerged. She floated up through a second story window and found herself on a steel balcony overlooking an empty concrete floor. She turned to face the window, gazing out into the snowy half-light. A crow appeared flying fast toward her. She opened the window to let him in, but he didn’t seem to see her."
